Supreme Grandmaster Vinson lee Gourd 10th dan
My Martial Arts began in 1955 in Okinawa Japan, way prior to the Japanese takeover. I found a round
bamboo building in the mountains while riding a motor scooter for enjoyment .Upon investigating, I saw
all these people punching and screaming. With my curiosity in motion I became intrigued. I watched for a
couple of weeks and then trying to talk to the instructor, that was very difficult as he spoke only
Japanese. Finally a person that understood and spoke English wished to help. She explained that i wished
to join his school but the instructor refused me. I continued going back and finally i was accepted. Master
Yamamoto i think was a 7th degree black belt, but i am not sure and no one really did know. The navy
ship that i was stationed on had early liberty due to the heat, so this gave me many hours of instructions.
One must remember there was no colored belts so no testing. After a year i went to Japan for a year and
there i studied Aikido, and then on to Korea where i found a school of Moo Duc Kwan and i trained with
Grandmaster kang for two years where i obtained a second degree black belt. I returned to Okinawa and
continued training in what is now called Shorin ryu and finally obtained my black belt. I returned to Korea
and continued study with Grandmaster kang. He wanted to come to the USA and i with a friend helped
him to get his documentation to the USA and he embarked in San Francisco and moved to Sacramento.
With a few of his Korean friends he opened a school on 6th street and prospered until his death. He also
became the Sacramento state college instructor and also Tae kwon Do instructor. Under his tutelage i
became a Grandmaster instructor.
Upon engaging employment with Northrop aircraft i started a club for instruction in the art of moo duc
kwan Tae kwon Do. I also began teaching at the Hawthorne YMCA and was there for 5 years and then i
opened a school on crenshaw blvd., just north of the college, and was there until i retired from Northrop
aircraft. I moved to Oklahoma and began teaching kempo for a 10th Grandmaster at Rogers state college.
My school was in Langley Oklahoma and i was there until an auto accident interrupted my teaching ability.
Prior to the accident i was promoted to 9th dan black belt. Recently i was passed by the Oklahoma state
board of kempo karate to 10th dan black belt, and only received my certificate last year.

Grandmaster Cruz grew up in Harlingen, TX during the 1940's and 50's. In his youth, he was the leader of Harlingen's most dangerous street gang, Los Zorros. At 14, he began to learn Kyokushinkai-Kan from his P.E. teacher, Japanese Master Toshiuke Yakashima and trained under him five days a week, two hours a day, for over five-and-a-half years. He was promoted to brown belt at 17, then to black belt at 18. He opened his own school with a strong desire to teach others, but at 19 his life as a gang member caught up with him and he was forced to close his school in Harlingen and ordered to leave the State of Texas.
Following the Judge's orders, Grandmaster Cruz left Texas and landed in the Coachella Valley in Indio, California on New Year's Eve 1960, where he remains. He opened his own karate school shortly thereafter, bringing karate to the entire Coachella Valley and thousands of students. In 1967, he went to Korea for 7 months where he began intensive training ten hours a day, six days a week in the Tang Soo Do style under Grandmaster Ujeang Chung. He fused the two styles he knew together, making Tang Soo Do the strongest martial arts there is.
As a competitor, Grandmaster Cruz has won over 1,600 trophies in kata, kumite and weapons. He is most famous for breaking several 2" thick bricks with his head on multiple occasions and for his Grand Championship performances with the katana. However, as many accomplishments as he has had, he is most proud of his abilities as an instructor. He is one of the most respected and sought after instructors in the world. He has produced dozens of champions and continues to do so. At 70 years old, he still continues to train, teach and give talks and conduct seminars.
Watch for Grandmaster Cruz' new books "Biography of a True Legend in the Martial Arts World" on 09/10/11, featuring Grandmaster Michael D. Garcia and Grandmaster Shihan Luehr and The Katana: A Presentation in Kata featuring Sensei Alfred J. Hernandez coming soon to www.bookemon.com
